Medical Director, Ohio Department of Medicaid
Dr. Mary Applegate serves as the Medical Director for the Ohio Department of Medicaid and is responsible for implementing the Medicaid Quality Strategy to improve health outcomes across the state. She is double-boarded in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and has been in rural primary care practice for over 25 years, still caring for newborns and mothers in her region. Special interests include the application of clinical principles and quality improvement science to health systems in order to improve both the quality of health care and health outcomes. She has been instrumental in driving change in perinatal health, safer opioid prescribing and integrating behavioral health care into all care. Many of these efforts are crystallizing into equity-focused community initiatives honoring a less traditional health workforce. Extra attention to engaging local partners and members of communities has informed the design and implementation of new value-based purchasing efforts, putting Ohio on the map of innovation in health care across the country. Dr. Applegate is a fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physicians.
